This former capital of duchy, many times in the course of past ages experienced by fate, during the last war became marked with stamp of crime. This, what occurred in the former Nazis KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, was a terrible drama of human beings. Because of that on grounds of the former concentration camp came into being the State-Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau, which has to be an all the world over call for respects of basic human values: freedom, dignity and right to life.
Today Oswiecim, a town of over 40 thousands population, is a centre of numerous peaceful initiatives, place of meetings of people of different nationalities regardless on religion and political convincement, the place, where new generations wish to build future without wars and violence.
For activities undertaken on aid of peace Oswiecim received in 1998r a title Attorney of Peace. The General Secretary of United Nations Organisation admits this title, so in this manner Oswiecim has joined the cities of Attorneys of Peace, organised into world-wide union.
